goEast - Festival des mittel- und osteuropäischen Films vom 22. bis 28. April 2009 zum neunten Mal in Wiesbaden / Hommage an Kira Muratova / Jan Sverák im Porträt / Erfolgreiche Etablierung der goEast-Projektbörse / "Vorboten der Wende" im goEast-Symposium
Höhepunkte des Filmschaffens im östlichen Europa präsentiert das diesjährige goEast-Filmfestival vom 22. bis 28. April in Wiesbaden. Das seit 2001 vom Deutschen Filminstitut - DIF veranstaltete Festival ist mit seinen vielen Filmsektionen und Gesprächsforen eine einzigartige Plattform für den Dialog und Austausch zwischen Ost und West. An sieben Festivaltagen präsentiert goEast in Anwesenheit von Regisseuren, Produzenten, Vertretern der Filmbranche und Journalisten zahlreiche Premieren und zeigt dabei Filme, die ohne das Festival nur selten einen Weg in deutsche Kinos finden. Ausgewählte Festivalbeiträge werden auch in diesem Jahr wieder im Kino im Deutschen Filmmuseum in Frankfurt gezeigt und damit einem noch größeren Publikum zugänglich gemacht.
Im Mittelpunkt von goEast steht der Wettbewerb. Die international besetzte Jury wählt aus zehn aktuellen Spiel- und sechs Dokumentarfilmen Preisträger in verschiedenen Kategorien aus: Der Hauptpreis "Die Goldene Lilie" (10.000 Euro) wird von Škoda Auto Deutschland gestiftet, die Stiftung "Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft" verleiht zum zweiten Mal den Dokumentarfilmpreis "Erinnerung und Zukunft" (10.000 Euro). Die Stadt Wiesbaden vergibt den Preis für die Beste Regie (7.500 Euro), das Auswärtige Amt den Preis für "künstlerische Originalität, die kulturelle Vielfalt schafft" (2.000 Euro). Im von der BHF-BANK-Stiftung finanzierten Hochschulwettbewerb konkurrieren bei goEast 2009 Hochschulen aus Kiew, Sofia und Deutschland um Preise von insgesamt 4.500 Euro.
Auch frühere cineastische Höhepunkte können bei goEast entdeckt werden: In seiner Hommage ehrt das Festival 2009 Kira Muratova. Die "Grande Dame des sowjet-russischen Kinos" gewann 1990 mit ASTENIÈESKIJ SINDROM / DAS ASTHENISCHE SYNDROM (UdSSR/Ukraine 1989) den Silbernen Bären der Berlinale sowie mit VTOROSTEPENNYE LJUDI / MENSCHEN ZWEITER KLASSE (Ukraine 2001) und NASTROJŠÈIK / DER KLAVIERSTIMMER (Ukraine 2005) jeweils den Hauptpreis des goEast-Filmfestivals. Sie wird 2009 in Wiesbaden persönlich anwesend sein und ihre Arbeit in einer umfassenden Retrospektive vorstellen.
Vor dem Hintergrund der politischen Umbrüche vor zwanzig Jahren stellt das goEast-Porträt den tschechischen Filmemacher Jan Sverák vor. Sverák greift in seiner Arbeit auf humorvolle und hintergründige Weise gesellschaftliche Realitäten in seinem Land auf. Sein Oscar-prämierter Film KOLJA (Tschechische Republik 1996) eroberte in den neunziger Jahren das internationale Kinopublikum. 2008 feierte VRATNÉ LAHVE / LEERGUT (Tschechische Republik 2007) in Deutschland Erfolge. Das goEast-Porträt zeigt 2009 auch unbekannte Seiten des populären tschechischen Regisseurs.
Schon traditionell richtet goEast einen Fokus auf die Förderung junger Filmemacher und führt dabei die intensive Zusammenarbeit mit der Robert Bosch Stiftung fort. Auch 2009 verleiht die Robert Bosch Stiftung ihren Filmförderpreis für Koproduktionen von Nachwuchsfilmemachern aus Deutschland und Ländern Osteuropas im Rahmen von goEast. Mit der goEast-Projektbörse fördert sie außerdem erneut ein einzigartiges Forum für die Entwicklung internationaler Filmprojekte, das 2008 sehr erfolgreich ins Leben gerufen wurde.
Einen Blick zurück auf die Vorzeichen der politischen Wende in Mittel- und Osteuropa wirft das diesjährige goEast-Symposium vom 23. bis 25. April: Unter dem Titel Winter adé. Filmische Vorboten der Wende werden dabei im neuen Murnauer Filmtheater in Wiesbaden Aspekte einer bis heute wenig bekannten Filmgeschichte beleuchtet. Durch Einführungsvortrag, Abschlussdiskussion und Gespräche nach jeder Aufführung erfährt die Filmreihe, die von der Kulturstiftung des Bundes und der Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek initiiert wurde, eine wichtige diskursive Vertiefung. Die Retrospektive bezieht große Namen der Filmgeschichte ebenso ein wie Arbeiten weniger bekannter Filmemacher und wird von der DEFA-Stiftung sowie von der Hessischen Landeszentrale für politische Bildung gefördert.
goEast - Festival des mittel- und osteuropäischen Films wird von zahlreichen Partnern unterstützt: Hauptförderer sind das Hessische Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst und die Stadt Wiesbaden, Škoda Auto Deutschland, die Robert Bosch Stiftung und die Stiftung "Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft". Filmmaking highlights from Eastern Europe are being presented at this year's goEast Film Festival from 22 to 28 April in Wiesbaden. Mounted annually by the German Film Institute - DIF since 2001, the festival's various sections and discussion forums make it a unique platform for dialogue and exchange between East and West. Over the seven days of the festival, goEast gathers together directors, producers, industry representatives and journalists to present any number of premiere screenings and films that would otherwise seldom find exhibition in German cinemas. In 2009 once again, repeat screenings of selected festival films will take place in the German Film Museum in Frankfurt, in this way extending the festival audience even further.
goEast centres round the Competition. The international jury chooses prizewinners in various categories among ten contemporary features and six documentaries. The main prize - the "Golden Lily" (10,000 euros) - is donated by Škoda Auto Deutschland. For the second time, the foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future" is awarding the documentary prize "Remembrance and Future" (10,000 euros). The City of Wiesbaden awards the Prize for Best Director (7,500 euros), and the Federal Foreign Office awards a Prize for Cultural Diversity (2,000 euros). Film schools from Kiev, Sofia and Germany are competing in the 2009 goEast Students' Competition, which is financed by the BHF-BANK-Foundation and offers prizes worth 4,500 euros in total.
goEast is also an opportunity to discover cinematic highlights from the past: the 2009 goEast Homage pays tribute to Kira Muratova. This "grande dame of Soviet-Russian cinema" won a Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 1990 with ASTENIÈESKIJ SINDROM / THE ASTHENIC SYNDROME (USSR/Ukraine, 1989) and the Main Prize at goEast on two separate occasions: with VTOROSTEPENNYE LJUDI / SECOND CLASS PEOPLE (Ukraine 2001) and NASTROJŠÈIK / THE TUNER (Ukraine, 2005). Kira Muratova will be in personal attendance at Wiesbaden for the comprehensive retrospective of her work at goEast 2009.
The goEast Portrait profiles the Czech filmmaker Jan Sverák against the backdrop of the political upheavals of 1989. The films of Sverák are humorous and subtle comments upon the social realities in his country. His Oscar-winning KOLYA (Czech Republic, 1996) won international acclaim in the 1990s, and German audiences flocked to see his VRATNÉ LAHVE / EMPTIES (Czech Republic, 2007). The 2009 goEast Portrait also illuminates unknown sides of the popular Czech director.
In line with an established tradition of focusing on the promotion of young filmmakers, goEast is continuing its intensive cooperation with Robert Bosch Stiftung. In 2009 once again, Robert Bosch Stiftung has chosen goEast as the platform for awarding its Co-Production Prize for Young German and Eastern European Filmmakers. With the goEast Project Market, moreover, the foundation is again supporting, after the successful launch in 2008, the unique forum for the development of international film projects.
In 2009, the year of anniversaries, the goEast Symposium (23 to 25 April) is looking back at the preliminary signs of political change in Central and Eastern Europe. Running in the new Murnauer Filmtheater in Wiesbaden under the title After Winter Comes Spring. Films Presaging the Fall of the Wall, the symposium explores aspects of a little publicised chapter in the history of Eastern European filmmaking. The introductory lecture, closing discussion and post-screening film discussions add an important element of discursive depth to the retrospective initiated by the Federal Cultural Foundation and Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek. Funded by the DEFA Foundation and the Agency for Civic Education in Hessen, the programme of films encompasses works by great names in the annals of cinema as well as those of less prominent filmmakers.
